What the project does.
These impactful programmes enhance access to clean and safe water across Zambia’s Central Province by rehabilitating boreholes powered by emission-free hand pump technology. In rural communities where residents typically rely on inefficient wood-burning methods to purify water, this initiative provides a sustainable solution that eliminates the need for firewood. By supplying purified water directly from boreholes, the safe water projects have a strong commitment reduces harmful smoke exposure and cuts carbon dioxide emissions from wood combustion.
The safe water projects have successfully rehabilitated 294 boreholes, providing safe drinking water to over 165,000 people. These water points are equipped with Afridev hand pumps, each managed by local water committees trained to oversee functionality and maintenance. The effort contributes to cleaner air, healthier communities, and lower greenhouse gas emissions, while promoting long-term climate resilience and water security throughout the region.
