Verified carbon projects sit alongside reduction. They do not make a venue or event carbon neutral or net zero.
What the project does.
The focus of this project is the reduction of gas leaks in the natural gas distribution system in Greater Dhaka and nearby areas in Bangladesh, which are particularly deprived and less developed regions. The distribution network, which spans over 12,000 km, was first constructed in the mid-1960s, however, due to a lack of maintenance over the years, a large amount of natural gas, mainly methane, leaks from the system, releasing this potent greenhouse gas into the atmosphere and contributing to global warming.
By addressing these leaks, the project aims to significantly reduce methane emissions, which are a major driver of climate change. Given methane’s impact as a greenhouse gas, fixing the system will not only improve efficiency but also have a positive environmental impact.
