What the project does.
This important project protects and sustainably manages 8,343 acres of forests in Northwest Arkansas and Northeast Oklahoma. The area consists of multiple privately owned tracts in the Ozark Mountains, where forests have historically been subjected to logging and development pressures. The project prevents aggressive timber harvesting, ensuring long-term carbon sequestration, biodiversity conservation, and protection of critical water resources.
Without the project, these forests would have been clear-cut or subject to intensive logging cycles. The financial incentives provided by carbon credit revenues enable landowners to maintain their forests instead of harvesting timber for economic gain. The project plays a crucial role in maintaining healthy watersheds, as many enrolled properties contain streamside management zones that feed into the White River, a key water source for Arkansas residents.
By ensuring the long-term preservation of these forests, the project provides significant climate and ecological benefits while supporting responsible land management practices.
