What the project does.
This carbon removal project promotes atmospheric CO2 sequestration, soil fertilization and regeneration, landfill emissions management, and increased water infiltration and retainment. Freres Engineered Wood’s 100%-biomass-fired rotary bed boiler is essential to the company’s steam and electricity production and its manufacturing operations. The biomass powering the boiler is locally sourced and supplemented with waste from the company’s production process. This sustainable approach not only contributes to the company’s energy needs but also results in the production of valuable biochar.
Biochar, a stable and carbon-rich substance, acts as a slow-release fertilizer capable of providing nourishment to the soil for millennia. It is commonly incorporated into compost and utilized as a soil conditioner, aligning with the principles of the International Biochar Initiative, which defines biochar as the solid material derived from the thermochemical conversion of biomass in an oxygen-limited environment.
The project provides environmental and responsible manufacturing benefits by sustainably removing carbon, promoting healthy soils and creating a new pathway to help maintain the long term sustainability of forests and ecosystems:
The project enhances the development of healthy soils by promoting healthy microbial colonization in soil, water infiltration and retainment, and reductions in the volume of buried organic waste. as well as reducing the gasses released into the atmosphere during that waste’s biological degradation.
