Supports circular economy and reduces electronic waste

Verified carbon projects sit alongside reduction. They do not make a venue or event carbon neutral or net zero.

What the project does.

This innovative project addresses the growing environmental challenge posed by the production and disposal of electronic devices. Operated from a dedicated facility in Kildare, Ireland, the initiative refurbishes used devices such as smartphones, laptops, and tablets. By doing so, it curtails the environmental toll of mining, manufacturing, and waste disposal typically associated with electronic device lifecycles.

The refurbishment process includes rigorous testing, diagnostics, repairs, and secure data wiping, ensuring devices meet quality standards before re-entering the market. The project significantly reduces greenhouse gas emissions by avoiding the need to produce new devices, contributing to a 73% reduction in emissions compared to baseline scenarios. In 2023 alone, 5,316 tCO₂e were avoided, with a projected 26,580 tCO₂e over the crediting period.

Supports circular economy and reduces electronic waste

The project has a strong commitment to environmental and sustainable development through the following contributions:

What it supports.

  • Reduces demand for new device production, lowering raw material extraction and associated emissions.
  • Prevents the release of harmful pollutants and reduces e-waste by reusing existing electronics.
  • In 2023, it achieved a circularity index of 0.97 and avoided 51.8 kg of e-waste per device refurbished.
  • Promotes a circular economy by extending product lifespans and reducing environmental impact.
  • Includes stakeholder consultations and environmental risk assessments to manage transport emissions and ensure responsible operations.
  • Supports skilled labor in diagnostics, repairs, and logistics at the Kildare facility.
  • Encourages growth of green jobs and sustainable practices in the region.
