The Challenge

Meeting Sustainability Goals in Construction

Tilbury Douglas faced the challenge of aligning with increasingly stringent environmental regulations while also reducing its carbon footprint across various operational scopes. The company had already established a strong sustainability framework under its People, Planet, Performance (PPP) strategy but required a more robust carbon offsetting approach to meet its ambitious net-zero targets.

Key challenges included:

  • Keeping up with regulatory compliance (ISO 14064, ESOS, PPN 06/21)
  • Addressing Scope 3 emissions from its extensive supply chain
Ensuring that carbon offsetting efforts were credible and transparent
  • Avoiding greenwashing and selecting the right carbon credit provider

Tilbury Douglas needed a reliable partner that could support their carbon offsetting strategy with transparency and efficiency.

Regulatory Compliance and Carbon Offsetting

Carbon Reduction Plan (CRP) & Annual Audits

Tilbury Douglas adheres to strict carbon reporting regulations, including Annual Carbon Audits and the PPN 06/21 Carbon Reduction Plan (CRP), which publicly discloses emissions and reduction strategies. The CRP is updated annually and is mandatory for government projects exceeding £5 million (a requirement expected to expand to all public sector projects). Integrating carbon offsets into the CRP, enables companies to claim carbon neutrality.

Energy Savings Opportunity Scheme (ESOS)

Tilbury Douglas ESOS mandates energy regulations requiring annual progress reports and audits every four years. While ESOS primarily focuses on energy consumption (kWh) rather than carbon emissions, activities such as carbon offsetting and transitioning from diesel to HVO fuel can form part of a company’s action plan to demonstrate emissions reductions.

This structured approach ensures Tilbury Douglas remains compliant while actively reducing its carbon footprint.

The Solution

Transparent Carbon Offsetting with One Tribe

After an extensive evaluation of nine different carbon offset providers, Tilbury Douglas selected One Tribe for its transparency, efficiency, and strong project portfolio. One Tribe provided the company with a streamlined process for for sourcing and procuring high-integrity carbon offsets, and ensuring compliance with sustainability regulations.

Key aspects of the solution:

  • Seamless carbon sourcing and offset procurement: One Tribe’s approach allowed Tilbury Douglas to efficiently purchase offsets and integrate them into their Carbon Reduction Plan (CRP).
  • Third-party verification: One Tribe is ICROA approved and audited annually to ensure the carbon projects and offsets procured meet the highest standards of environmental integrity .
  • Sustainable project investments: Tilbury Douglas opted for renewable energy technology credits, offsetting 3,350 tCO2e of emissions with renewable energy projects that replace fossil fuels and  support global emissions reductions.
  • Supplier engagement: The company works closely with its UK-based supply chain to decarbonise construction activities and reduce embedded carbon.

"

“The entire experience with One Tribe, from start to finish, was seamless. Their experienced team took the time to understand our requirements, provided a transparent process, and ensured we had full confidence in the integrity of the carbon projects we supported. One Tribe has become a trusted partner in our net-zero journey.”
