Winds of Change: The Manantiales Behr Wind Farm

Transforming Argentina's Energy Landscape through Sustainable Wind Power

PROJECT OVERVIEW

Driving Renewable Energy and Sustainable Development in Argentina

The Manantiales Behr Wind Farm Project is a landmark renewable energy initiative situated in the wind-rich region of southern Argentina. Located in the Escalante Department of Chubut Province, approximately 40 kilometers northwest of Comodoro Rivadavia, the project harnesses the region’s vast wind potential to generate sustainable energy for the national grid.

The project comprises the installation of 30 Vestas V-112 turbines, each with a 3.3 MW capacity, amounting to a total installed capacity of 99 MW. The farm is expected to produce 502,900 MWh of electricity annually, significantly contributing to the diversification of Argentina’s energy matrix and reducing reliance on fossil fuels.

By replacing grid electricity produced by fossil fuel-based power plants, this initiative is estimated to reduce greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions by an impressive 251,000 tons of CO₂ annually during its crediting period. Beyond environmental benefits, the wind farm enhances energy supply security, strengthens grid stability, and contributes to Argentina’s sustainable development goals.

Climate Benefits and Community Impact

The project has a strong commitment to environmental and sustainable development that benefit local communities through the following contributions:

ENVIRONMENT
The Manantiales Behr Wind Farm contributes to a cleaner energy future by:

  • Replacing fossil fuel-based electricity with renewable wind energy, reducing CO₂ and other local air pollutants (SO₂, NOx, and particulate matter).
  • Avoiding significant GHG emissions, supporting Argentina’s climate action goals under SDG 13.
  • Using advanced, low-impact wind turbine technology with minimal environmental footprint.

COMMUNITY
The project drives meaningful local development through:

  • Improved infrastructure, including roads and transmission lines, enhancing connectivity for surrounding communities.
  • Economic stimulation via increased local government tax revenues and regional development.
  • Ongoing stakeholder consultation processes to ensure community engagement and address grievances effectively.

EMPLOYMENT

The project creates a robust employment framework:

  • Job opportunities during construction and operational phases for local workers.
  • Skill-building programs to train operators and maintenance staff, fostering professional development in the renewable energy sector.
