Microfinance for Clean Energy

Reducing carbon emissions with clean energy

PROJECT OVERVIEW

Expanding Access to Clean Energy Across Mongolia

This programme supports low-income households in Mongolia by improving access to cleaner and more energy-efficient heating technologies through microfinance. The initiative helps households and microentrepreneurs invest in efficient stoves and heating systems that reduce fuel consumption while improving indoor comfort and air quality.

Designed to address barriers such as upfront cost, limited access to finance, and lack of clean energy awareness, the programme works with local microfinance institutions and clean energy suppliers to expand the distribution of efficient heating solutions across Mongolia. Carbon finance helps support education, training, product access, and long-term programme sustainability.

By reducing the amount of fuel required for household heating, the programme contributes to lower greenhouse gas emissions while supporting healthier living conditions and reduced energy expenditure for participating communities.

Environmental, Community, and Employment Benefits

The project has a strong commitment to environmental and sustainable development that benefit local communities through the following contributions:

Environment

The project reduces greenhouse gas emissions by improving the efficiency of household heating systems and reducing the amount of fuel required for space heating. By lowering fuel consumption, the programme also helps reduce pressure on natural resources and contributes to lower levels of air pollution associated with traditional heating methods.

Community

The programme supports low-income households by improving access to affordable clean energy technologies through microfinance. Participating households benefit from reduced energy expenditure, improved indoor air quality, and more reliable heating during Mongolia’s long winters. The initiative also helps strengthen local supply chains for clean energy products and services.

Economic Impact

By reducing fuel consumption and improving energy efficiency, the programme helps households lower ongoing heating costs. Carbon finance is also used to support education, training, aftersales service, and financing mechanisms that expand access to clean energy technologies in underserved communities.

Climate Action

The project contributes to climate mitigation by promoting cleaner and more energy-efficient heating technologies across Mongolia. By reducing fuel use and associated emissions, it supports the transition towards lower-carbon household energy systems while expanding access to cleaner energy solutions in vulnerable communities.
