Biogas Production from Agricultural Waste

Circular economy initiative boosting energy self-sufficiency in rural France

PROJECT OVERVIEW

Generating Biogas and Strengthening Economic Resilience in Rural Areas in France

BioAgri Energies is a group of eight shareholder farmers near Amiens, France, who each wanted to diversify their farming activities and income streams. They developed the Cottenchy methanation project with the aim of contributing to the reduction of the use of fossil fuel-based natural gas, which is responsible for 20% of GHG emissions in France. Converting agricultural waste into biogas offers a sustainable alternative, reducing emissions by 60-80% compared to natural gas.

The project site produces biogas through methanation, also referred to as anaerobic digestion, producing biogas and organic fertilizer. The company collects and treats organic waste, such as spent beer grains and pea fiber, and produces digestate, an organic fertilizer used on nearby farms. This process not only generates renewable energy but also addresses waste management and soil fertility.

By sustainably processing livestock effluent, energy crops, and waste from the local agri-food industry this project is a true local circular initiative that boosts energy self-sufficiency and strengthens economic resilience in rural areas.

Climate Benefits and Community Impact

The project provides renewable energy solutions together with sustainable co-benefits for the local communities that include:

ENVIRONMENT

Biomethane, as an alternative to fossil fuels, is a more sustainable renewable energy, produced from biomass and organic waste, that is better for the environment and reduces the use of fossil fuels. As a result of the project 47555 kg of renewable energy has been generated, with over 60kg of mineral nitrogen and mineral fertilizers avoided as well.

PROMOTING THE USE OF RENEWABLE ENERGY

The project works to significantly increase the share of renewable energy in the global energy mix through Biomethane, which represents an effective renewable energy source  originating from biomass and organic waste rather than fossil fuels.

SUSTAINABLE PARTNERSHIPS

This project is a collaborative effort of over 15 farmers, who are benefiting from farming sustainably. By taking up organic waste and transforming it into a usable, valuable product (digestate), this project embodies a circular economy and demonstrates efficient resource use.
